David Allinder began his tenure as Director of Bands at Shades Valley High School in 2001. Under his direction, the Shades Valley Symphonic band has performed for the Alabama Music Educators Conference, the University of Alabama Honor Band Festival, The Grand National Adjudicators Invitational, The Southeastern US Band Festival and the Music for All National Concert Band Festival. The band received Superior with Distinction each year at the State Music Performance Assessment. The marching program is a multi-year class winner at the Vanderbilt Marching Invitational and a participant in the Bands of America Regional and Super-regional Championships. Mr. Allinder received graduate and undergraduate degrees from the University of Alabama and has served on the faculties of UAB and Birmingham Southern College. David works at Hunter Street Baptist Church as a staff musician and is the Birmingham area director of Camp Jam, a rock and roll music camp for students. Mr. Allinder is a recipient of the National Band Association Citation of Excellence and was awarded National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certification in 2008. Mr. Allinder was a 2009 district finalist for state teacher of the year. He has been a cooperating teacher for a number of successful student interns and a Candidate Support Provider for teachers seeking NBPTS Certification. He is a member of the Phi Beta Mu honorary band fraternity and the National Band Association. David currently resides in McCalla, Alabama with his wife Jennifer and their children, Tanner and Mackenzie.
Gregory Gumina earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from West Virginia University, studying percussion and music theory under Professors Phil Faini, David Satterfield and Adam Mason. He also earned the Master of Arts in Music Education degree from the University of Alabama. While at UA, he served as a graduate assistant in the University Bands Department and was the arranger/instructor for the Million Dollar Band marching percussion section. Mr. Gumina performed with the Star of Indiana Drum and Bugle Corps and served on the staff of Southwind Drum and Bugle Corps for seven years. He was the percussion caption head for four years and also served as the corps program coordinator. Mt. Gumina is currently in his 18th year as Assistant Band Director and Percussion Director at Shades Valley High School. His ensembles there have performed at the 2001 NASPAAM International Convention, the 2005 and 2013 Alabama Music Educators Association State Conference, the 2011 Music for All Sandy Feldstein National Percussion Festival and numerous Percussive Arts Society events. In addition, Mr. Gumina teaches the Concert band and AP Music Theory at Shades Valley/JCIB. Mr. Gumina has served on the Arts Advisory Board and Curriculum Writing Committee for Jefferson County Schools and is currently president of the Alabama Music Educators Association. In 2010, Mr. Gumina achieved National Boards Certification. He resides in Trussville with his wife Gina and daughter Giada.
